Issue

I want to ship Alcohol through the FedEx integration in Linnworks. What item properties do I need to configure, and what values should I use?

Solution

To ship alcohol via the (New) FedEx integration, you must configure two specific item properties on each relevant product. These properties identify the goods as alcohol and specify the type of recipient the shipment is intended for.

Required Item Properties

Navigate to the item in Linnworks and set the following properties:

Property Name

ProductGoodsType
  • ALCOHOL

AlcoholLicenseeType
  • CONSUMER
  • LICENSEE

Property Details

ProductGoodsType - dentifies the product as an alcoholic goods type. This must always be set to ALCOHOL for any alcohol shipment to be recognised correctly by FedEx.

AlcoholLicenseeType values - Specifies the type of recipient the alcohol shipment is intended for. FedEx requires this designation to determine the appropriate handling and compliance rules. There are two accepted values:

  • CONSUMER - Use this when shipping wine directly to an individual for personal consumption, regardless of whether the delivery address is residential or commercial. FedEx currently permits only wine to be shipped licensee-to-consumer. An adult signature (21+) is required at the point of delivery. This option cannot be used for beer or spirits.
  • LICENSEE - Use this when shipping to a recipient who holds a valid state and/or federal alcohol-related licence (e.g. a wholesaler, distributor, retailer, manufacturer, or importer). This designation may also be used when sending alcohol samples to non-licensees at commercial addresses for commercial purposes, such as to a research facility or media company. Shipments designated as LICENSEE must not be destined for a residential address, including home-based businesses.

Prerequisites

Before shipping alcohol through FedEx via Linnworks, ensure the following requirements are met:

  • FedEx Alcohol Shipping Agreement: You must be a FedEx-approved alcohol shipper and have entered into a FedEx Alcohol Shipping Agreement. Consumers (individuals) are prohibited from shipping alcohol via FedEx.
  • Valid Alcohol Licence: The shipper must hold the appropriate alcohol licence for the origin and destination jurisdictions.
  • Adult Signature Required: All alcohol shipments require an adult signature at delivery. Ensure Adult Signature Required (ASR) is enabled in the service settings.
  • Destination Compliance: Alcohol shipping laws vary significantly by state and country. Always verify that the destination permits the specific type of alcohol being shipped and the recipient type selected.

Note: Both properties must be set for FedEx to correctly process the alcohol shipment declaration. Missing or incorrect values may result in label generation failures or shipment refusal. Always ensure your FedEx Alcohol Shipping Agreement is active before tendering alcohol shipments.
