Issue

I want to ship Lithium Batteries through the FedEx integration in Linnworks. What item properties do I need to configure?

Solution

To ship lithium batteries via the (New) FedEx integration, you must configure three specific item properties on each relevant product. These properties tell FedEx the battery type, how it is packed, and which IATA regulatory section applies.

Required Item Properties

Navigate to the item in Linnworks and set the following properties:

Property Details

BatteryType values:

  • LithiumIon - Rechargeable batteries that use lithium ions moving between electrodes to store and release energy. Common in consumer electronics such as smartphones, laptops, and power tools. Regulated under UN 3480 (standalone) or UN 3481 (in/with equipment).
  • LithiumMetal - Generally non-rechargeable (primary) batteries that use metallic lithium or lithium compounds as an anode. Typically found in watches, calculators, cameras, car key fobs, and temperature data loggers. Regulated under UN 3090 (standalone) or UN 3091 (in/with equipment).

BatteryIsContained values:

  • True = Contained in Equipment (battery is inside the device)
  • False = Packed with Equipment (battery is shipped alongside the device)

BatteryComplianceSection values:

  • NotApplicable - Use this when the shipment does not contain lithium batteries, or the batteries are exempt from IATA dangerous goods classification and no regulatory section applies.
  • IataSectionII - A reduced-compliance section previously available for smaller quantities of lithium batteries shipped in or with equipment. Section II shipments are smaller shipments of lithium batteries that had previously been granted exceptions for many of IATA's dangerous goods requirements. FedEx Note: as of 2022, Section II provisions were removed for standalone batteries (UN 3480 / UN 3090) shipped by air; those shipments must now use Section IA or IB. Lion Technology Section II may still apply to batteries contained in or packed with equipment.
  • IataSectionIB - A mid-level compliance tier for lithium batteries shipped by air. All provisions of the Dangerous Goods Regulations apply to Section IB shipments. Epec This section requires full dangerous goods documentation, a Shipper's Declaration, the lithium battery mark, a Class 9 hazard label, and a Cargo Aircraft Only label. Applies to batteries that exceed Section II quantity limits but fall below the stricter Section IA thresholds.
  • IataSectionIA - The most stringent compliance tier, applying to larger or higher-risk lithium battery shipments. Requires full dangerous goods documentation including a Shipper's Declaration, Class 9 labelling, and a Cargo Aircraft Only label. All lithium metal cells and batteries shipped by themselves under Section IA must bear a Cargo Aircraft Only label in addition to existing marks and labels.

Example Configuration

The following example shows a valid setup for a lithium metal battery packed alongside equipment, subject to IATA Section II regulations:

Note: All three properties must be set for FedEx to correctly process the battery declaration. Missing or incorrect values may result in shipment errors or label generation failures.
