Unknown Error is sometimes returned by Magento when a variation product contains a large number of variation items. It is not recommended to create several variation listings with a large number of variation items simultaneously. Try creating them one by one.
It is also recommended to turn re-indexing off. See here for more information on Magento 1 re-indexing.
